Type 2 cases are generally distinguished by the length of the research that precedes the generation of outputs: more than 15 years, for example, in the case of improved maritime pine varieties.

They also involve several partners at the research stage, but users or intermediaries are not involved at the beginning of the research and become engaged later. INRAE's long-term commitment proves essential. It is characterised notably by the long-term management of research infrastructures and the mobilisation of multidisciplinary scientific resources accumulated over a long period.

The institute also plays a leading role in the diffusion of research results and the generation of first-level impacts. Socio-economic partners provide their contribution and sometimes their infrastructures, but they generally become involved once the research is already advanced.

Type 2 cases generate impacts of variable intensity across a diversity of dimensions. The Maritime pine case belongs to this type.
