Ex Post standardized case studies

ASIRPA analyses the societal impacts of research. To this end, the ASIRPA approach is based on case studies of research that has generated impacts. The approach relies on a method that provides information not only on the impacts generated but also on the processes that enabled them.

How and why carry out case studies?
The aim is to describe the research work, the knowledge journey outside the academic sphere, its use by socio-economic actors, and the resulting societal impacts.

The approach is based on three complementary tools:

1. Chronology A chronology that identifies the beginning and end of the case, as well as the main events between these two boundaries, notably the moments when research worlds and user worlds connected.

2. Impact pathway A graphical representation of the impact pathway. The impact pathway distinguishes and describes:

  • Research inputs (characteristics of the research)
  • Research outputs (primary products)
  • First-level impacts generated within a first sphere of beneficiaries
  • Second-level impacts corresponding to the generalisation of first-level impacts
  • The intermediaries involved at each stage of the impact pathway

The impact pathway makes it possible to highlight INRAE's specific contribution and to identify the mechanisms underlying impact generation.

3. Impact vector An impact vector illustrated by a radar chart, which describes the impacts generated across five dimensions:

  • Economic
  • Environmental
  • Health (sanitary)
  • Political
  • Social and territorial
