Maritime Pine Improvement

Maritime Pine Improvement

This case illustrates an example of breeding resulting from a combination of genetics, environment and silvicultural knowledge that allowed the maintenance and development of an entire economic sector.

The Maritime Pine genetic breeding program forms part of the management of a "Production Forest" installed from improved planting materials, capable of providing the maximum genetic gain per time unit. The objective is to increase forest productivity by improving growth and wood quality while ensuring the adaptation of the species to future environmental conditions (drought resistance in the context of climate change, pest or disease resistance including likely introduction of exotic invasive pathogens, etc.).
The genetic breeding of the maritime pine program logically contributed to the dynamics of the concerned professional sectors: multipliers, nurseries, foresters, forest owners, managers, operators and manufacturers.
